Flaming June? More records go

A review of the weather of June 2023

The warm dry weather of May extended into June, with high pressure in charge for most of the month. With the winds mostly in the east however, there was cloud from time to time, especially in the mornings, which tempered the heat. Nevertheless, it was comfortably the warmest June of our 39 years of records, with a new record for the highest monthly mean at 18.1°C (the previous highest was 17.8°C in 2003); and for the highest average daily maximum of 24.5°C (the previous highest being 23.3°C in 2003).

In addition, the highest temperature of the month, 31.5°C, was the sixth highest in our records, and the average daily minimum of 12.4°C was the 3rd highest in our records.

This was also reflected in another very dry month. No rain fell from 20th May to 17th June, a total of 29 days, the second longest dry spell in our records after a thirty day period from 11th November to 11th December 1989. Of course the weather station wasn’t yet operational in the famous hot dry summer of 1976, when in most of the south-east of Britain no rain fell from early June until the August Bank Holiday.

There were just five days on which it rained, equalling the lowest in our records, set in 1996, and the total rain at 25.0mm made it our 6th driest June overall. Once again, nearby showers and thunderstorms largely skirted around us without a direct hit.

The pressure graph for the month reflects the trend, with high pressure in charge for the first half of the month, and a succession of thundery lows nearby for the remainder of the month.

And finally, it was not a particularly windy month; we have only fifteen years of comparable data but this was the third calmest June in our records. With the blocking high pressure to the north of the UK for much of the month, it is not surprising that the prevalent wind direction was easterly.
