Wet and mild – a review of November 2022

November has been unusually warm and damp in Epping, which has led to some unexpected reactions from plants after the heat and drought stress of the summer, with late new growth, very late flowers and even raspberries still fruiting into December. Most of the trees in the photo above are deciduous, yet have hardly begun changing colour even in the second week of November – leaf fall has been very late this year.

It’s been our third highest overall monthly mean temperature at 9.4°C, our fifth highest maximum at 16.1°C, and our second highest monthly minimum at 2.7°C, so another November without a frost or even a ground frost.

But it was wet: our fourth wettest November in 35 years of records with 132.9mm (our average November rainfall is 62.1mm), and only two previous Novembers had more days of rain than the 23 in this month. The 6th was also our second wettest November day on record, with 25.4mm of rain.

But it was not a November with the typical late Autumn gales – winds were generally light, especially towards the end of the month as settled weather finally arrived.

Once again, the problems with our network meant that several days of data are included from the other Epping weather station (our thanks to its owner and operator, Jeremy Trading). After a relapse in early December we are again on air, hopefully this time for good!
