The first half and the second half of January were quite different in character.

The first half was dominated low pressure, windy, wet and mild; the second half was much more settled, with high pressure in place, largely dry, often sunny but with a distinct chill – there were ten successive nights of frost, with one day almost an ice day as the temperature struggled to just 0.1°C at best.

So it is perhaps surprising to learn that overall the month was another warmer than the long term average. Our 39 years of records show that although only two Januarys in the past 20 years of our records had a lower monthly minimum than the -4.9 °C recorded on 17th, in fact the average daily minimum, average daily maximum and monthly mean were all above the long term average – the mean of 5.1 °C was a whole degree above the long term average.

The total rainfall for the month of 65.4mm was also only just above average, as the dry second half cancelled out the wet first half – only 5.2mm fell from 17th onwards as opposed to 60.2mm in the first sixteen days.

Those who regularly look at our website for current conditions will be relieved to know that the problems which have beset us for the second half of the month (and some of February) have been resolved. Our weather station sends its readings every five minutes to an online database at Weatherlink.com, which then feeds the website. We had thought that there were connectivity issues preventing the weather station from accessing the internet, but it appears this was not the case. Eventually we discovered that the weather station had been updating Weatherlink all along, but for reasons still not understood Weatherlink was not updating either its own dashboard or our website.

So, the good news is that no data has been lost, and was used to compile this report. However, as we can’t repeat the feeds to our website, the data it displays has had to be manually updated, so the main data history is now correct, with some gaps in areas like humidity and solar radiance.

We are sorry for the problems and hope this hasn’t inconvenienced our website visitors too much.
